History

Launched in China in October 2018, the Roewe i5 is a subcompact sedan sharing its 1.5-litre petrol engine family (naturally-aspirated and turbocharged variants) with the Buick Excelle GX — a reflection of the SAIC-GM joint venture's component sharing. Priced accessibly, it became a high-volume product in China's competitive entry-sedan segment.

For export markets, the i5 is sold as the MG5 under SAIC's MG marque; in electric estate form (the Roewe Ei5), it was sold in Europe as the MG5 EV — one of the first affordable electric estates to reach European buyers.
