Roewe W5 History

Unveiled at the 2011 Auto Shanghai exhibition, the Roewe W5 was the brand's first SUV, a body-on-frame vehicle built on the SsangYong Kyron platform and sold exclusively in China. It was notably available with two powertrain options: Roewe's own 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (162 PS) — also used in the 750 and 550 — and a more capable 3.2-litre Mercedes-Benz M104 inline-six producing 220 PS, which gave the W5 genuine off-road credibility.

The W5 used a P-4WD intelligent four-wheel-drive system and was positioned as a capable, premium-branded alternative to imported Japanese and Korean SUVs. It was discontinued around 2017 as Roewe shifted its SUV strategy toward the more modern, unibody RX-series crossovers.
