Renault Scénic History
History
Launched in late 1996 and declared 1997 European Car of the Year, the Mégane Scénic was the world's first compact MPV (or C-segment people carrier) — a tall, sliding-rear-seat, high-visibility people carrier that created an entirely new market segment. Based on the Mégane platform, it offered seating flexibility, flat-floor storage, and high-set driving positions previously found only in full-size minivans.
Three further Scénic generations in conventional MPV form followed (Scénic II 2003, Scénic III 2009, Scénic IV 2016), each offered alongside an extended Grand Scénic variant. The original Scénic format was discontinued in 2022 as the compact MPV segment contracted globally.
Renault revived the Scénic name in 2024 as the fully electric Scénic E-Tech — an electric compact SUV that won the 2024 European Car of the Year, making the Scénic one of a very small number of nameplates to win that award in different eras.
