Renault Espace History
Europe's first production MPV — Renault's 1984 Espace invented the minivan concept for the continent, spawning decades of family monovolumes.

History
Launched in July 1984 — originally rejected by Peugeot before Renault took it on — the first-generation Espace was designed by Matra and manufactured by Matra for Renault. Demand was sluggish at first (only nine sold in the first month), but the Espace gradually popularized the European MPV concept to become the segment's benchmark.
Four generations of traditional MPV followed, with combined production exceeding one million units. The fourth generation (2003–2014) was manufactured directly by Renault. The fifth generation (2014–2022) pivoted to crossover SUV styling ahead of the MPV segment's broad market decline.
Renault revived the Espace name for a sixth generation in 2023, now as a seven-seat crossover-SUV on the CMF-CD platform shared with the Austral, abandoning the classic monobox MPV body entirely.
