Renault Renault 4 History

Conceived as a 'blue jeans' car — versatile, unpretentious, go-anywhere — the Renault 4 debuted at the 1961 Paris Motor Show as Renault's first front-wheel-drive production car and the world's first mass-produced hatchback. Its top-hinged tailgate and folding rear seat pioneered the practical family hatchback format that would define European motoring for the next six decades.

The R4 was manufactured in 28 countries and marketed in over 100, making it one of the most globally produced French cars in history. An official production total of 8,135,424 units places it among the all-time volume leaders, trailing only the Volkswagen Beetle and Ford Model T at the time of its retirement in 1992.

Simple, inexpensive, and almost indestructible, the R4 was used as a delivery van, farm vehicle, and everyday transport across Europe, Africa, and South America. It was revived in spirit — and in name — by the Renault 4 E-Tech electric in 2025.
