Opel GT History

The Opel GT debuted as a concept at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show and went into production in 1968, built by French coachbuilder Brissonneau & Lotz on Kadett B mechanicals. Its low, swooping silhouette — often compared to the contemporary Chevrolet Corvette — was the work of Opel designer Erhard Schnell.

In North America, where it was sold through Buick dealerships, the GT was offered with a 1.9-litre four-cylinder making around 102 hp (SAE), giving the lightweight car a lively character. A total of 103,463 units were produced through 1973, when the car was discontinued due to the difficulty of meeting tightening emissions rules and the end of the bodybuilder's contract.
