Oldsmobile introduced the 88 badge for 1949, dropping its new high-compression 303-cubic-inch 'Rocket' V8 into a relatively light A-body. The combination of a big, powerful V8 in a smaller body led many to view the Rocket 88 as the first muscle car, and it was a sensation in performance circles.
The 88 vaulted Oldsmobile from staid to dominant on the track: a factory-stock Rocket 88 won the inaugural 1949 NASCAR Strictly Stock championship (Red Byron) and the cars cleaned up on early NASCAR ovals and in the Carrera Panamericana. It inspired the slogan 'Make a Date with a Rocket 88' and the 1951 song 'Rocket 88', often called the first rock-and-roll record.
Across the following decades the 88 ran through a long series of sub-named trims — Dynamic 88, Super 88, Delta 88 — as Oldsmobile's volume full-size car, before the nameplate was retired after 1999.
