History
The 442 debuted for 1964 as a performance option on the F-85/Cutlass. The name originally stood for its four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts; from 1965 Oldsmobile's marketing recast it around the 400-cubic-inch V8, four-barrel carb, and dual exhausts.
The 442 became a standalone model from 1968 to 1971 before reverting to a Cutlass option. Its high-performance W-30 package (1966–1971) added a hotter engine plus handling upgrades, and the Hurst/Olds spin-off skirted GM's 400-cubic-inch limit on intermediates by implying the bigger engines were installed by Hurst rather than Oldsmobile.
The classic 442 ran as a muscle car through the early 1970s and faded into the malaise era; the name was later revived as appearance/handling packages on the downsized and front-drive Cutlass lines in the mid-1980s and around 1990.
