History
The Elise (1996–2021) was Lotus's modern reinvention of 'add lightness' and the car that secured the company's survival. Its breakthrough was a bonded extruded-aluminium chassis that was extremely light and stiff, wrapped in a fibreglass body, giving a kerb weight around 700 kg.
Series 1 cars used the Rover K-series 1.8; from Series 2 (2001) Lotus switched to Toyota engines, including supercharged versions. It reached the US for 2005 but lost its airbag waiver in 2011, ending US street sales. Across three series it spawned the Exige and Europa S and underpinned the Tesla Roadster's chassis. Production ended in 2021 with the Elise, Exige, and Evora all replaced by the single Emira.
