Jeep Cherokee (XJ) History
History
Launched for 1984, the XJ Cherokee was the first American 4x4 with a fully integrated unibody (unitized) body, making it lighter, more efficient, and more car-like than the body-on-frame SUVs that came before. It is frequently credited as a vehicle that kicked off the modern SUV craze.
Its durable 4.0-liter AMC inline-six (from 1987) became legendary, and the XJ ran an exceptionally long US life through 2001 with only modest updates. The North American Cherokee name then passed to the Liberty before returning on the unrelated 2014–2023 KL crossover.
