The Accent replaced the Excel for the 1995 model year as Hyundai's entry-level subcompact, offering low prices and, over time, a much-improved reputation backed by Hyundai's lengthy warranty.

It was sold across multiple generations as a budget hatchback and sedan before North American sales ended after the 2022 model year as buyers shifted toward small crossovers.
