History
Previewed as a concept at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show and arriving in production for 2018, the H5 is built on the same platform as the Mazda Atenza (third-generation Mazda 6) through the FAW-Mazda joint venture. Despite its shared underpinnings, it carries full Hongqi luxury styling and is pitched as an accessible alternative to Audi and BMW in the Chinese executive market.
A thoroughly redesigned second generation arrived in 2022, adopting the sharper, more angular design language of the flagship H9. The H5 has become one of Hongqi's highest-volume models, central to the brand's transformation from a niche government supplier into a mainstream luxury automaker.
