The 2024 model year
Overview
The seventh-generation Mustang — code-named S650 — arrived for 2024 as an all-new car built on a heavily revised evolution of the previous S550 platform rather than a clean-sheet chassis. It landed as the Mustang neared its 60th year (the original debuted April 17, 1964) and, notably, Ford kept a V8 and a manual gearbox alive while most rivals went electric or automatic-only. The two powertrains carry over in concept — a turbo four and the 5.0 V8 — but both were reworked, and a new track-focused Dark Horse became the range-topping gas Mustang. Inside, a fully digital twin-screen cockpit replaced the old analog-leaning dash.

Year over year
What changed
- All-new S650 generation — a major evolution of the S550 platform, not a new chassis.
- Twin-screen digital cockpit: 12.4-inch instrument cluster and 13.4-inch infotainment display under a single curved glass panel.
- The 2.3L EcoBoost was redesigned (twin-scroll turbo, electronic wastegate, dual port + direct injection) and rated at 315 hp — the most for a four-cylinder Mustang.
- The fourth-generation 5.0L Coyote V8 added dual air intakes and dual throttle bodies; 480 hp standard, 486 hp with the optional active-valve performance exhaust.
- New Dark Horse flagship (500 hp) with a unique crankshaft, forged connecting rods derived from the GT500, and the Tremec TR-3160 manual.
- The 6-speed manual stayed available — GT keeps the Getrag MT-82; Dark Horse gets the Tremec.
- Built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.
Worth knowing
Notable
- Launched as the Mustang approached its 60th year and as one of the last new V8, manual-available pony cars on sale.
- First-ever Dark Horse: a new performance series name (not a revived badge) positioned as the track-focused flagship of the gas lineup.
- Trims: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Dark Horse, in fastback or (except Dark Horse) convertible.
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- Too new for a documented long-term reliability record at launch — treat any durability claim with caution.
- The one widely-reported early concern is the MT-82 6-speed manual (in EcoBoost/GT): owners and press have flagged notchy or balky shifts, a complaint carried over from the prior generation. The Dark Horse's Tremec TR-3160 is a different, more robust unit.

We don't publish a market estimate for the 2024 model year yet. A valuation ships here only when it can be sourced and dated — we'd rather show nothing than a number we can't stand behind.
