The 1965 model year
Overview
The first full model year. At the August 1964 changeover the engine lineup was revised, generators gave way to alternators, and the Fastback (2+2) joined the hardtop and convertible. 559,451 were built.

What changed
- The alternator replaced the generator.
- The 170 six gave way to the 200 six as the base engine.
- The 260 V8 was retired; the 289 family became the V8 line.
- The Fastback (2+2) was introduced.
- Front disc brakes became optional.
- The GT Equipment Package arrived mid-year (15,079 built).
- The Shelby GT350 debuted as a Mustang-based performance car.
