1974Dodge Charger

Restyled for 1971 with a more rounded, semi-fastback 'fuselage' look, split grille, and revised body, adapting to tightening emissions and insurance pressures that were winding down the muscle era.

The 1974 model year

Overview

The 1974 Charger closed the 1971-1974 B-body generation with five advertised forms: regular Coupe and hardtop, Rallye versions of both V8 bodies, and the formal-roof SE. The new 360 high-performance four-barrel replaced the 340 as the Rallye small-block option, Dodge split the 400 into standard- and high-performance four-barrel calibrations, and the 440 returned for one final Charger model year.

Year over year

What changed

  • The 245-net-hp 360 four-barrel replaced the 340 as the Rallye-only high-performance small-block.
  • Two 400 four-barrels were listed: a 205-hp single-exhaust version and a 250-hp dual-exhaust high-performance version.
  • The 440 returned at 275 net horsepower but was automatic-only and restricted to Rallye-package cars or the SE.
  • Energy-absorbing front and rear bumper systems lengthened the car to 216 inches.
  • This was the final model year for the 1971-1974 third-generation body and for a big-block-powered Charger.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • Dodge's brochure explicitly offered the Rallye package on all V8 Charger Coupes and hardtops but excluded the SE.
  • The 360 high-performance four-barrel produced 245 net horsepower and 320 lb-ft with dual exhaust.
  • The 275-hp 440 was the last factory big-block offered in the original rear-drive Charger line.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Decode the VIN, body line, Rallye package, induction, exhaust, and transmission together: both 400s used four-barrel carburetion but had materially different output, exhaust, and service parts.
  • The 360 and 440 require Rallye documentation on Coupe or hardtop cars, while the SE could receive the 440 without the Rallye package; no 1974 Charger R/T was built.
  • Inspect the rubber-isolated K-member mounts, torsion-bar crossmember, cowl, rear rails, trunk floor, quarter panels, and impact-bumper mounting structure before valuing trim completeness.

  • Engine oil

    Sourced interval available

Applies to: 1974 · United States · Exact 1974 Dodge passenger-car bulletin whose model footer names Charger. This is intentionally partial coverage: the bulletin establishes engine-oil selection and timing, not the rest of the owner's maintenance schedule.

Published interval: 4,000 mi / 3 months · Normal operating conditions; whichever occurs first. The bulletin directs more-frequent changes for dusty roads or unusually short cold-weather trips and does not publish one universal severe-use interval.
