Restyled for 1971 with a more rounded, semi-fastback 'fuselage' look, split grille, and revised body, adapting to tightening emissions and insurance pressures that were winding down the muscle era.

The 1972 model year

Overview

For 1972 Dodge retired the Charger R/T and Super Bee names and introduced the A57 Rallye package on both the pillared Coupe and hardtop. The regular Coupe and hardtop, formal-roof SE, and Rallye variants shared a revised engine family led by the new 400. Horsepower was now quoted only under the SAE net method. The 340 was Rallye-only, while the 440 four-barrel was restricted to Rallye and SE applications.

Year over year

What changed

  • The R/T and Super Bee were replaced by the insurance-friendlier A57 Rallye package.
  • The 400-cubic-inch B-series V8 replaced the discontinued 383 in two- and four-barrel forms.
  • The 340 four-barrel was available only with the Rallye package; the 440 four-barrel was limited to Rallye and SE applications.
  • SAE net horsepower became the sole advertised rating method.
  • Early literature listed a 440 Six Pack Rallye, but it was withdrawn after emissions testing and only a tiny number of factory exceptions were built.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • The A57 Rallye package could be ordered on either the pillared Coupe or hardtop and did not require a high-output engine.
  • The Rallye-only 340 produced 240 net horsepower, while the regular-production 440 four-barrel produced 280 net horsepower.
  • At least two Charger hardtops are documented with the withdrawn 440 Six Pack powertrain.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • Do not identify an engine from appearance alone: decode the VIN, fender tag, broadcast sheet, carburetor, exhaust, and transmission because 318, 340, two 400s, and two 440 induction systems have different service and ordering requirements.
  • A claimed 1972 Six Pack requires exceptional documentation; the brochure listing alone does not prove that a car received the withdrawn engine at the factory.
  • Rallye-specific louvered doors, grille, taillamp treatment, and power-bulge hood are one-year restoration items. Inspect the cowl, torsion-bar crossmember, rear rails, trunk floor, and quarter panels before valuing trim completeness.

Start with the service interval, then match the engine or exact version you own. Order links appear only when a catalog-backed part number is available, and every listing still needs a fitment check.
