History

The DeSoto Powermaster was the six-cylinder line offered for buyers who didn't want — or couldn't stretch to — the new Hemi V8 Firedome. It used Chrysler's L-head straight-six and replaced the old Custom/Deluxe six-cylinder cars in the reorganized lineup.

As the V8 took over the mid-price market, the six-cylinder Powermaster was short-lived; it was dropped after the 1954 model year, leaving DeSoto a V8-only brand for the Forward Look era that followed.
