History

The D5 BiTurbo was unveiled at the September 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) alongside the petrol B5 on the F10 5 Series platform, using an Alpina-modified version of BMW's N57 diesel inline-six with twin turbochargers. It offered the touring-car refinement of the B5 but with diesel torque and economy — a popular combination in European markets.

The D5 S on the G30 5 Series (presented at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show) stepped up to a tri-turbo configuration in left-hand-drive markets, producing outstanding mid-range thrust. The D5 S concluded production alongside the G30 B5 in 2024.
