AC Mk VI / Series 1 History

In 2009 AC licensed Gullwing GmbH in Germany to produce the Mk VI, retaining the classic Cobra silhouette in a modern lightweight composite body and fitting a 6.2-litre Chevrolet LS3 V8 (328 kW) with an optional supercharged version. The German operation traded as AC Automotive until liquidation in July 2023.

Under the current AC Cars corporate structure, in 2020 the company announced the AC Cobra Series 1 Electric — a battery-powered Cobra capped at 58 cars (the number a nod to the first Cobra's 1962 origins) — alongside the petrol-powered Cobra 140 Charter Edition, celebrating the model's 60th anniversary. First customer deliveries were slated for 2022, and the car has been built only in very small numbers since (exact volumes not publicly reported). New road-homologated Cobra models continue to be produced, keeping the AC nameplate alive as Britain's longest-continuously-operating car manufacturer.
