History
The Zastava Florida was unveiled at the Belgrade Auto Show on 19 February 1987 and went on sale on 2 October 1988. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and his team at Italdesign — the same studio behind the VW Golf and Fiat Uno — the Florida was Zastava's most ambitious and technologically advanced car, developed at a cost of $150 million.
The name 'Florida' was chosen to celebrate Yugo's perceived American success. Sold internationally as the Yugo Sana, it was a sharp stylistic departure from the Fića and Koral, offering a modern five-door hatchback body with a contemporary interior. It competed in the value hatchback segment against the Dacia Logan and Lada 112 on price.
In 2000 a refreshed variant called the Florida 103FL was revealed, shown at the 2001 Belgrade Auto Show as the 'Florida In'. It remained in continuous production until November 2008, when the last Florida — and the last Zastava car ever — was completed at Kragujevac.
