History
The XC90 arrived for the 2003 model year as Volvo's first-ever SUV, built on the P2 platform shared with the S80 and V70. Its combination of seven-passenger capacity, five-star safety ratings, and Scandinavian design made it an immediate hit and effectively saved Volvo's North American business at a critical moment — at one point it accounted for roughly a quarter of Volvo's US sales.
The first generation ran remarkably long — through 2014 — receiving facelifts and engine updates (including a T6 3.2-liter six replacing the turbofive, and a performance T6 twin-scroll turbo). The thoroughly redesigned second generation launched for 2016 on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, introducing the Thor's Hammer LED headlights, a landscape-orientation touchscreen, and a plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain. The XC90 remains Volvo's flagship and best-selling model.
