History
Launched in June 1991, the 850 marked a fundamental break from Volvo tradition: it was front-wheel drive, used a transverse five-cylinder engine, and offered a level of dynamic refinement the boxy 240 could never match. The estate variant followed in early 1993. Total production over six years reached 716,903 cars.
The 850 also became famous in motorsport when Volvo entered the British Touring Car Championship in 1994 with a 850 estate — a deliberate publicity stunt that turned into a genuine competitive effort. The limited-edition 850 T-5R (1995–1996) was a turbocharged performance sedan and wagon, followed by the 850 R (1996–1997) as a production continuation. The 850 was replaced by the S70 (sedan) and V70 (wagon) for 1997.
