History

The XC40 debuted for the 2018 model year as Volvo's smallest SUV, built on the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform. It won European Car of the Year for 2018 in its first full year on the market, praised for combining premium design with accessible entry pricing.

A fully battery-electric XC40 Recharge was launched for 2021 — Volvo's first all-electric production car — with twin motors and over 200 miles of EPA-estimated range. The XC40 also became available through Volvo's subscription service and was an early experiment in flexible ownership models.
