History
The V70 was introduced in 1996 as the wagon successor to the Volvo 850 estate, inheriting the 850's turbocharged five-cylinder engines and platform while updating the styling. The name followed Volvo's new convention: V for versatile (wagon), 70 for the segment. The first generation ran through 2000.
A second generation (P2 platform, 2000–2007) and a third generation (P3, 2007–2016) followed. The V70 ran in parallel with the XC70, a raised all-wheel-drive variant for those wanting estate-wagon utility with light off-road capability. The V70 was discontinued after 2016 as Volvo's line-up shifted toward crossovers; the V90 Cross Country took its spiritual role.
