History

Developed from 1995 and entering production in 1997, the GAZ-3110 was GAZ's attempt to modernize the Volga while minimizing tooling investment: it retained the central body shell of the GAZ-24 but received entirely new exterior panels, a revised front end, and updated interior trim. The result was a car that looked meaningfully fresher while sharing the proven mechanicals that Russian mechanics knew how to maintain cheaply.

The 3110's timing proved fortuitous: the 1998 Russian financial crisis made imported Western cars unaffordable for most buyers, and the domestically produced, easy-to-repair Volga sold well by default. The model ran until 2004, when it was superseded by the more substantially updated GAZ-31105.
