Vignale Ferrari Bespoke Bodies History

From around 1950, Enzo Ferrari designated Carrozzeria Vignale as his primary coachbuilder, displacing Touring from that role. Working closely with designer Giovanni Michelotti, Vignale created bodies for approximately 155 Ferraris across the early decade — competition racers and exclusive road cars alike. Michelotti alone drew 150 Ferrari bodies for Vignale that went into production.

The Ferrari–Vignale collaboration produced outright Mille Miglia victories in 1951, 1952, and 1953. The 340 America that won the 1951 race outright wore Vignale coachwork; of the 31 Ferrari 250 MM built, Vignale bodied 13 as spiders (the majority of that variant). The pair also bodied barchetta versions of the Ferrari 166, 250 MM, and 340 MM.

The partnership wound down in the early 1960s as Pininfarina consolidated its exclusive relationship with Ferrari, and Michelotti established his own independent studio in 1959. Vignale's Ferrari chapter — roughly a decade of work that helped define the early Maranello aesthetic — remains the carrozzeria's most historically significant output.
