UAZ UAZ Hunter History

The UAZ Hunter entered production on 19 November 2003 as a modernized evolution of the UAZ-31514 hard-top, replacing the base civilian UAZ-3151 line. The Hunter retained the proven ladder-frame chassis and portal-axle 4×4 drivetrain of the 469-family but added contemporary amenities that the Soviet-era design could not offer: power steering, an optional air-conditioning system, and updated interior ergonomics. It became the base model of the UAZ 4×4 range in 2005 when the Patriot was added above it.

Despite sharing its DNA with a 1972 design, the Hunter found a loyal global following among off-road enthusiasts drawn to its exceptional ground clearance, mechanical simplicity, and easy field repairability — traits that modern SUVs have largely abandoned. Export markets in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa, and Latin America have sustained production alongside domestic Russian demand. The Hunter is considered the last true analog of the original UAZ-469 philosophy: raw, maintenance-friendly, and genuinely capable in extreme terrain.
