The Swift nameplate began in 1984 as the export identity of the Suzuki Cultus, a front-wheel-drive subcompact introduced in 1983. In the United States the first-generation Swift was sold through 1994 (North American production of the Mk3 ended that year); it was not sold in the US after 2001.
A fully redesigned global Swift debuted at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, reestablishing the nameplate as a sporty, European-oriented subcompact. The Swift Sport — initially a naturally aspirated hot hatch, later turbocharged — became a class benchmark for driver engagement at an affordable price.
The current Swift remains a top-seller in Japan and Europe, and is produced at Maruti Suzuki plants in India as one of that market's best-selling cars.
