Suzuki Sidekick History
A more refined, larger companion to the Samurai for the US market — introduced for 1989, later gaining a four-door option and the sporting Sidekick Sport.

History
Suzuki introduced the Sidekick (the US name for the global Vitara/Escudo) for the 1989 model year as a step up from the Samurai — a proper compact SUV with more refinement, better road manners, and a 1.6-liter four-cylinder. It was initially available only as a two-door convertible or hardtop.
A four-door long-wheelbase version arrived for 1991, broadening the Sidekick's appeal to families. The 1995 Sidekick Sport added a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder producing approximately 120 hp — a genuine performance upgrade. After the 1998 model year, the US nameplate shifted to 'Vitara' for the second-generation car.
