Radical SR8 History

Unveiled in 2005, the SR8 took the SR3's spaceframe formula and planted a bespoke Powertec (later RPE) RPX V8 engine at its heart — a unit constructed by combining elements from two Suzuki inline-four engines to produce a 2,680 cc V8 that revved beyond 10,000 rpm and produced around 358–430 bhp depending on tune. The result was a sub-600 kg open sports car with Le Mans Prototype-level straight-line performance available to amateur track-day drivers.

The SR8 LM variant, launched in 2007 with a 2,800 cc version of the RPX V8 producing around 449–455 bhp, secured the car's place in motoring history: on 20 August 2009, Dutch racing driver Michael Vergers lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 48.28 seconds, setting a new production-car lap record. The record stood for over a decade and brought Radical international recognition far beyond the niche track-day world.

Over its long life the SR8 has spawned several derivatives including the SR8 RX (second generation, 2011), the SR8 SRX (third generation, 2017), and extreme variants such as the SR8 TDR with twin-turbocharged power outputs exceeding 800 bhp. A non-running electric 'SRZero' prototype was constructed by a Racing Green Endurance team from Imperial College London as a research vehicle, though it was never a production Radical product. The SR8 remains in production as of 2026, continuing to serve as the make's halo performance machine.
