History

The Pegaso Z-102 emerged from ENASA's Barcelona factory in 1951 under the direction of engineer Wifredo Ricart, a former Alfa Romeo chief designer who had left Italy to lead Spain's new state-owned vehicle manufacturer. Rather than producing a conventional sports car, Ricart applied Formula 1–level engineering: a quad-cam (DOHC) all-alloy V8 with desmodromic valve actuation, dry-sump lubrication, and a rear-mounted five-speed transaxle for near-50/50 weight distribution. The chassis was a multi-tubular spaceframe clothed in aluminum panels by an assortment of coachbuilders including Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, Saoutchik of Paris, and ENASA's own Barcelonan workshops.

Engine displacement and tune varied across the production run: 2.5-litre naturally aspirated units produced around 175 hp; a later 2.8-litre variant delivered approximately 170 hp in standard form; and a 3.2-litre supercharged version produced up to 360 hp. In September 1953 a supercharged Z-102 recorded 243 km/h (151 mph) at Jabbeke, Belgium, making it the fastest production car in the world at that time — a distinction that put Spain, improbably, at the cutting edge of automotive performance.

Production was never intended to be commercial. ENASA built the Z-102 primarily to enhance the Pegaso brand's prestige and to train craftsmen in advanced metal-working — the cars were effectively rolling advertisements for the factory's capability. Approximately 84 cars were completed between 1951 and 1958 (some sources cite 71; the Wikipedia article on the model records 84). Body splits were roughly 56 fixed-roof coupés and 28 cabriolets. The extraordinary cost of hand-building each car on a cost-no-object basis made the Z-102 economically unsustainable, and production wound down after 1958.
