Panoz Esperante History
History
Named after the racing-prototype line, the production Esperante launched in 2000 as Panoz's most refined and longest-running road car — a hand-assembled, aluminum-intensive two-seater built in Braselton, Georgia. It debuted as an open convertible powered by Ford's 4.6-liter modular V8 (around 305 horsepower in early naturally aspirated form), and a fixed-roof coupe followed later in the run.
The Esperante spawned a family of variants over its life, including the open base car (later badged GT), the GTLM, the GTS, and tuner-developed versions. The supercharged GTLM coupe lifted output to roughly 420 horsepower, cutting the 0–60 mph time toward four seconds. Production was deliberately tiny — on the order of a couple hundred cars across 2000–2007 — and the Esperante also formed the basis of Panoz's GT and ALMS race entries before it was eventually succeeded by the Avezzano.
