Monteverdi Range Rover Monteverdi History

Development began in 1978 when Peter Monteverdi recognised the demand for a four-door Range Rover several years before Land Rover itself would offer one. White two-door Range Rovers were shipped directly by Land Rover to Fissore's factory in Savigliano, where a rear door was added to each side and the body was re-worked to accommodate the longer passenger cabin. Crucially, Land Rover cooperated fully with the project and allowed customers to order the Monteverdi conversion through Land Rover dealers.

The Range Rover Monteverdi was launched at the March 1980 Geneva Motor Show and found an immediate market among buyers who wanted the Range Rover's capability with proper rear accommodation. Production came to an abrupt end in early 1982 — not from a lack of demand, but because Land Rover introduced its own factory four-door Range Rover in 1981, eliminating the conversion's raison d'être. Approximately 167 examples were built, making it one of Monteverdi's more significant production runs.
