History
Introduced in 1972 as a more accessible companion to the Bora, the Merak used the same Giugiaro body but with a glass-covered rear deck over a vestigial rear seat area, making it a 2+2 layout. Its engine was a 3.0-litre V6 derived from the unit shared with the Citroën SM luxury saloon, producing around 190 PS in standard form.
The 1975 Merak SS (Super Sport) brought significant improvements: a higher-output 220 PS version of the V6, deleted Citroën hydraulics (replaced with a more conventional system for reliability), a lower ride height, and stronger brakes. The SS is regarded as the definitive Merak. Production of all Meraks ended in 1983, with approximately 1,830 cars built across both variants.
