History

The GX debuted for the 2003 model year, introduced at the January 2002 Detroit Auto Show. It is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and uses a body-on-frame platform, unlike the car-based RX — giving it genuine off-road capability while clothing it in Lexus luxury. The original GX 470 used a 4.7L V8 shared with the LX 470.

A second generation, the GX 460, arrived for 2010 with a new 4.6L V8 and a revised platform; it ran largely unchanged for over a decade, gaining a reputation as one of the most durable used vehicles in America. A fully redesigned third-generation GX debuted for 2024, with updated styling and technology while retaining the body-on-frame capability.
