Hanomag Garant History

For 1932 Hanomag concentrated its resources on a single new model: a 1.1-litre four-cylinder saloon with 23 PS. The gamble worked immediately — demand was strong enough to require two-shift production and the car sold well throughout the early 1930s.

Renamed the Garant in 1934 when Hanomag moved to model-name branding (dropping the old Steuer-PS designation system), the car sat at the entry level of the range. By 1936 Hanomag celebrated the construction of its 65,000th car, a milestone the Garant largely fuelled. It was joined by the larger Rekord in 1933 and the two models formed the backbone of Hanomag's passenger-car business. A total of 11,947 Garants were built before production ended in 1938, when the model was replaced by the unitary-bodied 1.3 Litre.
