History
The Maestro arrived in 1983 as Austin Rover's challenger in the Ford Escort and Volkswagen Golf class, a roomy five-door hatchback that replaced both the Maxi and the Allegro. Early MG and Vanden Plas models featured a novelty 'talking dashboard' — a solid-state instrument pack whose synthesised voice (recorded by actress Nicolette McKenzie) read out warnings.
Performance came from the MG Maestro: the early 1600 used a troublesome R-Series engine, but the MG Maestro 2.0i (115 bhp) delivered genuine GTI-class pace, and the late MG Maestro Turbo (1989–1991) hit 128 mph. The Austin name was dropped in 1987–88, after which the car continued as the Rover/MG Maestro until 1994.
