Gurgel Ipanema History

The Ipanema was the first car produced by Gurgel, introduced in 1969 alongside the company's founding. It was a dune buggy with a fiberglass body mounted on the Volkswagen Beetle's floorpan, using VW's air-cooled rear engine and running gear — a common and cost-effective approach in Brazil at the time. It was effectively superseded when the more rugged Xavante arrived in 1973.

Larger than rival buggies on the market, the Ipanema established Gurgel's identity as a maker of light, purpose-built Brazilian vehicles. It was not a major commercial success, but it gave João do Amaral Gurgel the platform to develop the proprietary Plasteel technology that would define the company's subsequent models.
