GAZ GAZ-A History

The GAZ-A was among the very first vehicles produced when the Gorky plant opened production on 1 January 1932, built under the technical-assistance agreement with Ford. It was based closely on the Ford Model A, assembled initially from imported Ford components and progressively localized.

The open four-door phaeton body was the primary variant, practical for Soviet conditions of the era. Production ran until 1936, when the more modern GAZ-M1 replaced it on the assembly line. The GAZ-A established the Gorky plant's manufacturing processes and trained its workforce for the domestic industry that followed.
