1984Dodge Charger
A completely different car: a front-wheel-drive subcompact three-door hatchback on the Omni-based L-body. The turbocharged Shelby Charger (1983–1987) was its performance halo. Shares the Charger name only — not the muscle-era lineage.

The 1984 model year
Overview
For 1984 Dodge continued the front-wheel-drive L-body Charger in three factory models: Charger, Charger 2.2, and Shelby Charger. The regular Charger used a standard 1.6-liter four and could be upgraded to Chrysler's 2.2-liter; Charger 2.2 made the 2.2 standard and added model-specific appearance and equipment. The Shelby Charger used a 110-hp high-performance 2.2 and five-speed manual. It was still naturally aspirated—the turbocharged Shelby Charger arrived for 1985.

Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- Identify both model and engine before ordering parts: a regular Charger may carry either the 1.6- or 2.2-liter engine, while Charger 2.2 and Shelby Charger use distinct equipment and calibrations.
- Do not order 1985 turbo fuel, ignition, cooling, or induction parts for the naturally aspirated 1984 Shelby Charger.
- The archived maintenance schedule rendered below is scoped to the naturally aspirated 2.2-liter record and does not establish service intervals or parts fitment for the 1.6-liter base engine.
