1983Dodge Charger
A completely different car: a front-wheel-drive subcompact three-door hatchback on the Omni-based L-body. The turbocharged Shelby Charger (1983–1987) was its performance halo. Shares the Charger name only — not the muscle-era lineage.

The 1983 model year
Overview
For 1983 Dodge expanded the L-body from one Charger 2.2 package into a full Charger range. The base car began the model year with a 1.7-liter engine before a new 1.6-liter four arrived midyear; Chrysler's 2.2-liter was available in the regular Charger and powered the more aggressively trimmed Charger 2.2. The midyear Shelby Charger became the performance flagship with a 107-hp, 127-lb-ft naturally aspirated 2.2, five-speed manual, firmer chassis tuning, 15-inch wheels, and Shelby-specific bodywork.

Year over year
What changed
- The Charger became the L-body model name rather than only the 024's Charger 2.2 package.
- A 1.7-liter engine was standard at launch; Dodge's catalog announced a new 1.6-liter replacement for midyear.
- Charger 2.2 added a standard performance-ratio five-speed, simulated hood scoop, fender vents, rear spoiler, console, sport suspension, and 14-inch Rallye wheels.
- The Shelby Charger arrived midyear with 107 hp, a five-speed manual, 15-inch wheels, firmer springs and shocks, aero extensions, and Shelby interior details.
Worth knowing
Notable
- The first Shelby Charger was naturally aspirated, not turbocharged.
- Dodge's historical account rates the regular 2.2 at 94 hp and 117 lb-ft and the Shelby version at 107 hp and 127 lb-ft.
- The factory catalog explicitly identifies the base-engine change as a midyear event.
- The Shelby Charger was offered in silver with blue accents or blue with silver accents.

Reliability & ownership notes
- Use the build date and emissions label to distinguish early 1.7-liter from midyear 1.6-liter base cars before ordering engine, ignition, cooling, or emissions parts.
- Do not apply the regular 2.2-liter tune-up or drivetrain specification to the Shelby engine without checking its higher compression, calibration, cam timing, exhaust, and five-speed-only application.
- The archived maintenance schedule currently rendered below is scoped to the naturally aspirated 2.2-liter VIN C record; it does not establish intervals for the 1.6- or 1.7-liter base engines.
