History

First sold for 1959 as a car-based pickup answering Ford's Ranchero, the El Camino was reintroduced in 1964 on the new Chevelle platform and is best known in that mid-size form.

Sharing the Chevelle's muscle-era hardware, the El Camino SS could be ordered with big-block V8s, including the 454, making it both a hauler and a muscle car. Production ended in 1987.
