The 1953 model year

Overview

Chevrolet introduced the Corvette as a two-seat Motorama show car in January 1953, then began production that June in Flint, Michigan. The production car kept the concept's fiberglass convertible body, Polo White paint and red interior. Chevrolet records 300 cars for the first year. Its familiar six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission distinguish the launch car from the V8 and manual-transmission Corvettes that followed. Chevrolet's factory history describes the modified 235-cu.-in. six with three carburetors and dual exhaust; its 150-hp output was paired with the two-speed Powerglide. The November 15, 1953 factory AMA sheet gives the displacement more precisely as 235.5 cu in, torque as 223 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm and wheelbase as 102 inches. These are period factory specifications: its 150-bhp rating at 4,200 rpm uses the sheet's engine-test conditions, rather than a modern SAE net measurement.

Notable

  • The factory model designation is 2934. The AMA body table lists a two-door, two-passenger convertible; its transmission tables mark the manual gearbox unavailable and Powerglide standard. There is one documented regular-production body/engine/gearbox combination, not a choice between a six-cylinder and V8 or between manual and automatic.
  • Separate the production cars from Motorama prototypes when checking a vehicle's history. This lineup covers the regular-production car; it does not count show-car variations or accessories as additional factory configurations.
