The 1996 model year

Overview

BMW revised every U.S. 3 Series engine tier for 1996 while retaining eight exact body configurations. The 1.9-liter M44 powered the 318i sedan, 318is coupe, 318i Convertible, and 318ti Compact. The new 2.8-liter M52 powered the 328i sedan, 328is coupe, and 328i Convertible in place of the prior 325 range. The M3 coupe moved to the 3.2-liter S52; M3 sedan and convertible bodies were not yet part of the U.S. roster.
