The Arnage arrived in 1998 (named, like the Mulsanne, for a corner at Le Mans), replacing both the Turbo R and the Brooklands as Bentley's flagship saloon. It launched as Volkswagen was acquiring Bentley, and is regarded as the last Bentley developed on the old Rolls-Royce-derived architecture rather than VW Group underpinnings.
Early cars used a BMW V8; Bentley soon reverted to its own twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V8, the engine enthusiasts and the brand preferred. The Arnage anchored the top of the range — alongside the related Azure convertible and Brooklands coupé — through the launch of the volume Continental GT, before giving way to the all-new Mulsanne in 2009.
