Audi TT History
History
The Audi TT (Typ 8N, first generation) entered production in October 1998 as a two-door sports coupe based on the Volkswagen Group PQ34 platform. Its design by Freeman Thomas and Romulus Rost was radical: circular forms, exposed bolts as design elements, and a coherent, bauhaus-influenced aesthetic that became one of the most recognisable car designs of the 1990s. A roadster variant followed shortly after the coupe. Early cars were recalled in 1999–2000 for stability improvements after high-speed accidents prompted engineering changes including rear spoilers and revised suspension.
A second generation (8J, 2006) adopted a modified Audi A3 platform and added more power and a wider body, while the third generation (8S/FV, 2014) moved to the VW Group MQB platform and introduced Audi's all-digital 'virtual cockpit' dashboard — arguably the most influential instrument-panel design of the 2010s. Performance TTS and TT RS (five-cylinder turbo) models topped the range.
Audi confirmed in 2019 that the third generation would be the last, and production ended in November 2023 after 662,762 total units built. In total, three generations spanned 25 years.
