History
Audi announced the first-generation A3 (Typ 8L) in June 1995 and launched it in Europe in September 1996, marking the brand's return to small cars after a 19-year gap. Built on the Volkswagen Group PQ34 platform shared with the Golf Mk4, the A3 was deliberately positioned as a premium product — a step above the Golf it mechanically resembled — with a sportier image supported by an initial three-door-only body.
A five-door Sportback was added to the first generation in 1999, and subsequent generations (8P in 2003, 8V in 2012, 8Y in 2020) progressively expanded the body-style range to include a cabriolet and a three-box sedan. The 8V generation introduced the RS3 performance variant with a 362-hp five-cylinder engine, reviving the five-pot connection to the Ur-Quattro in compact form.
Across four generations the A3 has grown into Audi's highest-volume model globally, proving that the premium compact segment the brand helped pioneer is now its commercial backbone.
