History
The A6 began in 1994 as a badge-change on the final Audi 100 (C4 generation), maintaining the lineage of that nameplate. The first true clean-sheet A6 arrived in 1997 as the C5 generation (Typ 4B), based on a new platform and offering more power and technology. This was the car that established the A6 as a serious rival to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.
Subsequent generations — C6 (2004), C7 (2011), C8 (2018) — each brought major chassis and technology advances. The C6 introduced Audi's now-familiar large single-frame grille. The C7 was lighter and featured a full aluminum-intensive structure. The C8 added mild-hybrid tech, digital matrix LED headlights, and a 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid. A C9 generation is planned for 2026.
The A6's performance halo has always been the RS6 Avant wagon — one of the most celebrated performance estate cars ever made. The C5 RS6 (2002) used a twin-turbo V8, the C6 and C7 RS6 escalated through V10 biturbo and then V8 biturbo iterations, and the C8 RS6 Avant (2020, 591 hp) became a global phenomenon.
