Audi Q5 History
History
Unveiled at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show (Typ 8R), the Audi Q5 arrived in North America as a 2009 model year vehicle, launched on sale in March 2009. Built on the same MLB platform as the A4 (B8), it offered quattro all-wheel drive, turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, and a cabin that matched the A4/A6's premium interior quality in an elevated-ride SUV body.
A second generation (Typ 80A, 2017 model year) debuted in 2016 on the MLB Evo platform, sharing its bones with the B9 A4. It grew marginally in size, added Audi's virtual cockpit, and was joined by a plug-in hybrid Q5 55 TFSI e. The SQ5 performance variant moved from a supercharged V6 to a turbocharged unit across generations.
Audi unveiled a third generation Q5 on 2 September 2024, on the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. The Q5 has been Audi's top-selling model in many markets throughout its run.
