The 1992 model year
Overview
The W140 opened its U.S. run for model year 1992 with five sedans: gasoline 300 SE, 400 SE, 500 SEL, and 600 SEL plus the 300 SD turbodiesel documented in the separate North American factory manual. Mercedes-Benz describes the generation as a comfort-first flagship with generous dimensions and double glazing; the 600 models introduced a V12 to series-production Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.

Year over year
What changed
- The W140 replaced the W126 with an entirely new five-model U.S. roster.
- The 300 SD preserved a diesel choice while the 600 SEL established a 6.0-liter V12 flagship above the inline-six and two V8 choices.
Worth knowing
Notable
- Mercedes-Benz recorded the W140 as World Car 1992, while the club guide dates the North American model run from 1992 through 1999.
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- Service records matter on every W140; inspect the pneumatic convenience system, all electronic equipment, rear window regulators, power-steering leaks, and engine mounts before purchase.
- The club guide identifies pre-1996 evaporator leakage and 1993–1995 biodegradable wiring harnesses as specific inspection points; verify repairs on the individual car rather than assuming every example is affected.
- Match service parts to the exact engine, transmission, market, and build date shown on the data plate; a shared W140 body does not make six-cylinder, V8, V12, and diesel fitment interchangeable.
